MyPlastic - Giles Duley
We surround ourselves with powerful objects that either spark memories of times gone by or that we would find hard to live without. They can comfort us, make our lives a little easier, or remind us of special people. In these unpredictable times of national lockdown, partial opening, and then closing down again we have decided to reissue a project which explored these emotive objects. The original project combined a physical exhibition with digital films highlighting the very personal connections and relationships we have with particular objects made of plastics. This reissue digital exhibition showcases the videos made for the original project and features stories from designers, humanitarian documentary makers, animators, monster makers, and academics. These stories demonstrate how objects can be loaded with emotions, memories and meaning. After abandoning a career as an editorial photographer in the fashion and music industries, Giles Duley now focuses on humanitarian projects through organisations such as Medicins sans Frontiers in countries including Afghanistan, Syria and Angola. His images capture the strength of people who fight adversity, rather than succumb to it. He talks about civil war, cockroaches and sitting in plastic chairs. “I found myself in quite a dangerous area and the compound was literally burnt to the ground”
